Offline-first desktop PDF workspace for macOS and Windows.
2026 — Present • Open source
github.com/bryanneedsgit/Paperdesk
Summary

Paperdesk is an offline-first desktop PDF workspace built with Tauri 2, React, TypeScript, PDF.js, and pdf-lib. It keeps files on-device while providing page-level workflows for merging, arranging, annotating, formatting, form filling, and export.

Key Highlights
  • Opens and merges local PDFs into one editable workspace without uploading or syncing files.
  • Supports page selection, deletion, drag-and-drop reordering, rotation, and undo/redo.
  • Exports headers, footers, watermarks, form edits, and text, highlight, shape, pen, and signature annotations into a new PDF.

Tauri + PDF.js
Under the hood
  • PDF.js powers local rendering and thumbnails, while pdf-lib handles page-level output operations and final export.
  • Source PDF bytes stay unchanged; workspace edits are represented as page-level metadata until export.
  • The Tauri 2 desktop shell targets macOS and Windows with platform-specific bundle configuration and local autosave metadata recovery.

Paintbox

Open-source layer-based raster image editor for macOS.
2026 — Present • Open source
github.com/bryanneedsgit/paintbox
Summary

Paintbox is a lightweight, layer-based raster image editor for macOS built with Tauri 2, React, TypeScript, and HTML Canvas. I am working on it as a practical exploration of precise canvas tooling, desktop app packaging, and the editor systems behind selections, layers, history, adjustments, and effects.

Key Highlights
  • Built around a single mutable editor store exposed to React through useSyncExternalStore.
  • Covers pixel-editing workflows across selections, brush, pencil, eraser, fill, gradient, text, shapes, pan, and zoom.
  • Includes layer operations, clipboard workflows, undo/redo, image transforms, adjustments, effects, and self-test coverage for the editor engine.

Tauri + Canvas
Under the hood
  • The renderer keeps document-resolution layers on offscreen canvases, with the visible canvas compositing layers, checkerboards, overlays, and interaction feedback.
  • Selection work spans rectangle, ellipse, lasso, magic wand tolerance, mask combination, outline tracing, and selection-clipped edits.
  • The architecture separates editor state, selection math, pixel operations, transforms, and canvas interaction so features can be added without turning the UI into the source of truth.
